Professional tax is a state-level levy on people who earn from employment, a profession, trade or calling, and it is governed by each state's own Professional Tax law. Employers in states that levy it must register, deduct the tax from employee salaries according to the state slab, pay it to the state and file periodic returns. Self-employed professionals and business owners may have to enrol for their own liability. Registration, slabs, due dates and returns differ by state, and some states do not levy it at all. Our team confirms whether it applies to you, completes the registration and keeps the monthly or annual compliance running.

How It Works
Confirm state applicability
We check whether the state or local body where you operate levies professional tax, who in your organisation is liable, and which authority administers registration, returns and payment.
Collect business and employee details
We gather the entity documents, the address of each establishment, the employee list with salary details and the bank details, then match them to what the state portal or office asks for.
Apply for registration or enrolment
We submit the application through the state portal or the department, depending on the state, and obtain the certificate or registration number, usually along with a separate enrolment for the proprietor where required.
Configure payroll deductions
We map each employee to the applicable slab, brief your payroll team on the deduction, and confirm the treatment for new joiners, leavers, bonuses and variable pay under your state rules.
Pay and file returns
We prepare challans, pay the tax collected and file the return for the period, whether the state asks for monthly, quarterly or annual filing, and retain the acknowledgement for your records.
Review, amend and handle notices
We update the registration when addresses, employee counts or entities change, and assist with notices on mismatches or late filing, so that the account remains regular with the state.
Documents Required
- PAN of the business or the proprietor, and incorporation or registration papers of the entity
- Address proof of each establishment, such as a rent agreement, ownership paper or utility bill
- GST registration, shop establishment registration or other existing registrations, where available
- List of employees with name, designation, date of joining and monthly salary details
- Identity proof and photographs of the proprietor, partners or directors who sign the application
- Cancelled cheque or bank statement of the bank account used for payment
- Digital signature of the authorised signatory, where the state portal requires it
- Previous returns or challans, if the establishment was already registered and is being transferred or updated
Timeline and Fees
Indicative timeline: Registration can often be completed within a week or two once the documents are ready, though it depends on the state authority and portal. After that, deduction and return filing run on the state schedule.
Professional fee: Our professional fee depends on the number of states and establishments, the number of employees, whether registration alone or ongoing monthly filing is needed and whether past defaults need regularising. Tax and any government fee are paid at actuals. Contact our team for a written quote.
What Can Go Wrong if This Is Missed or Done Incorrectly
- Failure to register in a state that levies the tax can attract penalty and interest under that state law
- Not deducting the tax from salary does not remove the employer liability, which can build up over time
- Late payment or late return filing usually carries interest and late fees under the state rules
- Deducting the wrong amount because of an outdated slab can create mismatches that lead to notices later
Frequently Asked Questions
Is professional tax applicable in every state?
No. It is a state subject and only some states and union territories levy it, and in a few places it is collected through local bodies. Employers operating across states should check each location separately. We confirm applicability for your address and employees before registering anything.
Who is responsible for deducting professional tax from salary?
In states that levy it, the employer has to deduct the amount from the salary of each liable employee, deposit it with the state and file returns. If the employer fails to deduct it, the employer can still be held responsible for the tax, along with interest and penalty under the state law.
What is the difference between PT registration and PT enrolment?
In states that follow this pattern, registration is for an employer who deducts tax from the salary of employees, while enrolment is for the person who pays professional tax on their own income, such as a business owner or professional. Some employers need both. The names and the process differ by state, so check yours.
Is there a limit on how much professional tax a person can pay?
Yes. The Constitution caps the amount of professional tax that a state can levy on one person in a year. Within that cap, each state sets its own slabs, based on salary or income. We apply the current slab notified by your state, since slabs can be revised by the state government.
How often must professional tax returns be filed?
It depends on the state and on the amount the employer pays. Some states require monthly returns and payments, others permit periodic or annual filing for smaller employers. Due dates are set by each state. We note the schedule applicable to your registration and remind you before each date.
What if my business has no employees but I am a professional?
In many PT states, people who carry on a profession, trade or business are themselves liable even without employees, and must enrol and pay according to the state schedule. The rules differ by state and by category of professional, so confirm whether you are liable before the payment date is missed.
