Check whether ITR-1 suits you and file it accurately, with salary, house property and interest income reconciled.

ITR-1, also called Sahaj, is the simplest income tax return form for a resident individual whose income comes from salary or pension, one house property, interest and other sources, within the limits set for the form. It is meant for straightforward salaried taxpayers, but it cannot be used by everyone, and picking the wrong form can lead to a defective return. Our Chartered Accountants review your income and assets, confirm whether ITR-1 is genuinely available to you, reconcile your figures with Form 26AS, AIS and Form 16, and file the return with proper e-verification guidance.

Who provides this service: our team of Chartered Accountants.

Who Needs ITR-1 (Sahaj) Filing?

  • Salaried employees whose income is mainly salary and bank interest
  • Pensioners who also earn modest interest or rental income from a single property
  • First-time filers who want to confirm which form actually applies to them
  • Employees who changed jobs during the year and hold more than one Form 16
  • Taxpayers who want a refund of excess TDS and need it filed correctly

Key Benefits

  • Eligibility check before filing, so you are not using ITR-1 when your income or assets need a different form
  • Matching of salary, interest and TDS figures against Form 16, Form 26AS and the Annual Information Statement
  • Review of house property income and interest claims so the return reflects the facts and your documents
  • Help comparing the tax regimes the law allows and recording your choice correctly in the return
  • Careful treatment of deductions that can be claimed, based on proofs you actually hold
  • E-verification guidance after filing, since a return that is not verified is treated as not filed

How It Works

  1. Profile and eligibility check

We ask about residential status, income sources, shareholdings, directorships, foreign assets and house properties, then confirm whether ITR-1 can be used or whether another form applies.

  2. Collect and reconcile data

We gather Form 16, bank interest certificates and rent details, then compare them with Form 26AS and AIS to spot missing income, unreported interest or TDS that has not been credited.

  3. Compute income and compare regimes

Our team computes taxable income under the available regimes using your documents, explains the difference in plain language and records your chosen regime correctly in the return.

  4. Prepare and review the return

The ITR-1 is prepared with salary, house property and other income schedules, deductions and tax paid, and shared with you in draft so that you can confirm every figure before filing.

  5. File on the portal

After your approval we file the return on the Income Tax e-filing portal, and share the acknowledgement along with a copy of the computation for your records.

  6. E-verify and track processing

We guide you through e-verification within the period the law allows, then watch for processing, refund status and any intimation, so a mismatch is addressed early rather than turning into a notice.

Documents Required

  • PAN and Aadhaar details linked to your e-filing account
  • Form 16 from each employer for the year
  • Form 26AS and Annual Information Statement from the portal
  • Bank interest certificates for savings and fixed deposits
  • Rent receipts or lease details if you earn house property income
  • Home loan interest certificate, where interest is claimed
  • Proofs for deductions such as insurance premium, provident fund and eligible investments
  • Bank account details for refund credit

Timeline and Fees

Indicative timeline: A straightforward ITR-1 can often be prepared in a day or two after documents are received. Processing and refunds depend on the Income Tax Department, so we give only an indicative range.

Professional fee: The fee depends on the number of income sources and documents to reconcile, and whether a missing Form 16 or AIS mismatch needs extra work. Any tax payable is separate and is paid directly by you to the government.

What Can Go Wrong if This Is Missed or Done Incorrectly

  • Using ITR-1 when you are not eligible can make the return defective and open to rejection
  • Not reporting interest or other income visible in AIS can trigger an intimation or notice
  • Missing the due date can bring a late fee, interest and loss of certain carry-forward and refund benefits
  • An unverified return is treated as not filed even if it was uploaded

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can file ITR-1 Sahaj?

ITR-1 is generally for resident individuals with income from salary or pension, one house property, interest and other sources, and limited agricultural income, with total income within the limit stated for the form. The exact conditions are updated by the department, so check the instructions for the relevant assessment year.

Who cannot use ITR-1?

ITR-1 is not available to a person who is a director in a company, holds unlisted equity shares, has income from more than one house property, owns assets or earns income outside India, or has capital gains beyond what the form permits. Such taxpayers usually need ITR-2 or another form.

Can I file ITR-1 if I have capital gains?

Only in the narrow cases that the form allows, and those conditions change from year to year. Most capital gains, such as profits from selling property or from share trading beyond the permitted case, need a different form. Check the current instructions or ask our team before choosing.

Which tax regime should I choose in ITR-1?

The better regime depends on your deductions, house loan interest, rent and other claims. We compute the tax under both and show the difference, then you decide. Where the law allows you to change your choice in a later year, we explain how that works.

What if my Form 16 and AIS do not match?

Differences are common, for example interest income reported in AIS that was left out of Form 16. We find the reason, correct the return where the AIS entry is right, and submit feedback on the portal where it is wrong. Reporting a figure without checking it can cause a notice.

Is e-verification necessary after filing ITR-1?

Yes. A return that is filed but not verified within the prescribed window is treated as not filed, which can lead to penalty and loss of benefits. Aadhaar OTP, net banking and other electronic methods are available, and we walk you through the one that suits you.
